Hege Høisæter Introduces a New Vision of Norwegian Contemporary Music With Himmelskygge

Norwegian mezzo-soprano Hege Høisæter is preparing to unveil Himmelskygge, a striking new album that explores the meeting point between classical tradition, contemporary composition, electronic soundscapes, and creative collaboration.

Released via LAWO Classics, the album brings together an impressive collection of musicians and composers, including pianist Jorunn Marie Bratlie, composer and electronic artist Kari Telstad Sundet, and jazz ensemble Tov a Vot, featuring Vetle Nærø (piano/keys), Theis Jakob (bass), and Ola Grindbakken (drums).

Rather than following a traditional approach to classical song, Himmelskygge creates a space where different musical identities can come together. The album moves between generations of Norwegian composers, combining established works with new perspectives and experimental approaches.

A key highlight of the release is Kari Telstad Sundet’s The Drift, a song cycle inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson. The piece blends acoustic performance with electronic textures, creating a powerful atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive. Sundet’s unique role as both composer and performer adds another layer of depth to the work.

The album also showcases the diversity of Norwegian contemporary music through works by Olav Anton Thommessen, Carl Gustav Sparre Olsen, and Gisle Kverndokk. From dramatic and expressive compositions to more reflective moments, each piece contributes to the album’s wider exploration of emotion, sound, and storytelling.

Adding a modern edge to the project, Tov a Vot bring their own creative voice to Himmelskygge with Two Dystopian Songs, a work they composed for the album. Their blend of jazz influences and contemporary ideas adds another dimension to the recording, highlighting the album’s ability to move beyond traditional boundaries.

At its core, Himmelskygge is a celebration of collaboration and artistic exploration. Hege Høisæter brings together different worlds — classical vocals, electronic experimentation, jazz-inspired creativity, and Norwegian musical heritage — resulting in an album that feels both timeless and forward-thinking.

With its release, Himmelskygge offers listeners a unique glimpse into the evolving world of contemporary Nordic music and the artists shaping its future.
