Dom Quincey shares hazy new single ‘Anything At All’

Dom Quincey continues to provide intimate reflections on the process of grief. With his latest release, ‘Anything At All’, he provides another hazy blur of feelings with vivid, sweeping instrumentation to support his emotive lyricism. The single is released ahead of his forthcoming EP, with previous tracks ‘Through The Door’ and ‘It’s Not The End’, also circling vulnerability in their performances, but finding an affecting power through it.

Hushed but restless production brings soft drums that occasionally lash out into glitchy fills. Strings sweep, captivating as reverberating guitars invite a shimmer into the air. Choruses swell as the vocals focus on punchier delivery amongst the still tender melodies. The warmth and distortion rub against each other, providing a tension that eventually flourishes into an electrifying climax, as listeners witness some of Dom’s most authoritative vocal talents.

He adds, “The song started as I was playing around with a guitar tuning used on Joni Mitchell’s ‘Hejira’. I loved how open and unresolved it felt. I wrote the first verse and took it to my friend Coby, who helped me restructure the chords. We made a draft of a song, but it didn’t feel reflective of where I was at the time, so I sat with it and wrote the rest of it a few months later. I took it to Evil Genius, who produced the song with me and helped to refine its contrasting textures. ‘Anything at All’ is a song about feeling lost and disillusioned through turbulent times.

The lyrics tread a line between fantasy and reality, so I wanted the production to embody both digital and organic elements. I was inspired by the glitchy, minimalist production on some of James Blake’s early work, as well as the distorted, earthy sounds used by grunge bands of the 90s. This disjointed sonic palette reflects a push and pull between the fragmented states of mind explored in the song.”

The distinct sound of Dom Quincey stems from an intensely personal quality of his writing. Backed by prestigious music tastemakers across the press and playlisting, his catalogue has seen a continued upward trend of improvement and praise. That is set to culminate with the new EP, as his momentum is at its strongest to date.
