ALT BLK ERA expand their genre-bending universe on ‘Our World’

ALT BLK ERA return with Our World, a bold, emotionally charged EP that finds the Nottingham sister duo expanding their genre-defying universe with confidence, urgency, and intent. Released via LAB Records, the project arrives on the heels of their breakthrough debut Rave Immortal, which topped the Official UK Rock & Metal Chart and firmly established them as one of the UK’s most exciting alternative acts. If that record introduced their identity, Our World feels like a deeper excavation, both into their sound and the emotional landscape shaping it.

Across the EP, Nyrobi and Chaya Beckett-Messam continue to refine their signature fusion of rock, EDM, and pop, leaning further into contrast as a creative engine. Heavy basslines collide with distorted guitars and high-impact electronic production, while their distinct vocal interplay, one raw and grounded, the other more fluid and melodic, gives each track a sense of internal dialogue. The result is a body of work that feels both volatile and controlled, chaotic yet carefully constructed.

Thematically, Our World is rooted in the turbulence of the present moment. As the duo explain, the EP charts a spectrum of emotional responses to global uncertainty: grief, escapism, identity, overwhelm, and ultimately, hope. Tracks like “Tissues” and “Lost In The Back Of My Mind” lean into heaviness and disorientation, capturing emotional exhaustion with striking clarity. Elsewhere, “Silhouettes In The Mirror” turns inward, grappling with shifting identity in a fractured world, while “Okay (Cyber Racing)” bursts forward with a more frantic, adrenaline-fuelled energy, less escape than overload, a rush of feeling when stillness becomes impossible.

Yet Our World is not defined solely by its darker corners. The EP’s title track offers a clear shift in perspective, reframing beauty, connection, and small acts of kindness as forms of resistance. Rather than denying chaos, it sits alongside it, suggesting that hope is not a contradiction but a necessary counterpart. It’s this emotional arc, from fragmentation to fragile optimism, that gives the project its structure and impact.

Sonically, ALT BLK ERA continue to push their hybrid aesthetic into sharper focus. Rock elements provide weight and aggression, while EDM influences inject urgency and motion, and pop sensibilities ensure the hooks land with clarity. The production feels deliberately maximalist at times, mirroring the intensity of the themes, yet still leaves space for quieter emotional moments to land.

Beyond the music itself, the duo’s wider vision continues to shape their identity. As advocates for inclusivity and hidden disability awareness, particularly through Nyrobi’s work with ME/CFS advocacy, ALT BLK ERA operates with a sense of purpose that extends beyond performance. That sense of intention subtly informs Our World, which often feels like both a personal outlet and a broader statement about resilience in difficult times.

If Rave Immortal was the ignition, Our World is the storm that follows: intense, unpredictable, and ultimately charged with a sense of survival.
