Seattle-based Mexican chamber rock band Actress return with their brand-new single “Chances”, a striking preview of their upcoming debut EP Summer’s Daughter. The single lands alongside an energetic new music video, filmed across Europe this past summer, that perfectly captures the cathartic pulse and emotional depth of the track. Fans are even invited to join in on the fun: if you recognise any of the locations featured, the band encourages you to recreate the shots and tag them on social media.
Comprising Kevin (vocals, rhythm guitar), Zach (drums), Caleb (bass) and May (lead guitar), Actress craft a sound that thrives on contrasts. They merge melodic intimacy with explosive intensity, resulting in a sonic palette that feels raw, textured and deeply alive. Their work embodies an independent spirit built on community, collaboration and creative self-determination.
Speaking about the new release, the band explain, “‘Chances’ is about the quiet desperation and hopeless bargaining that pushes and pulls and keeps two people alive.” Frontman Kevin adds, “The track was written in the fall after I’d moved to a new apartment in a new city where I didn’t know anyone. I was really stuck in the past, trying to bring something long gone into my present. Like the rest of the EP, we recorded it independently in a barn with our own equipment. Through rehearsals and live shows, the song grew and matured into what it is now.”
Musically, “Chances” reflects that same duality of frustration and release. Kevin’s piercing vocals soar above layered guitars and steady percussion, balancing yearning with acceptance. The song’s rhythm builds like a heartbeat, carrying a tension that never fully resolves, which makes every note land with emotional precision.
Lyrically, Actress capture the delicate push and pull of relationships in flux:
“Can’t you read the letter that I’ve written in my eyes
Don’t you know their hardships are a blessing in disguise”
“I just want to be the one the only to see you in the light of day, the dying sun, the promises we meant to keep. I know I know this isn’t fair but we can still pretend I’m not broken I’m just backwards.”
The words are quietly devastating, anchored by the honesty of imperfection and the beauty of trying anyway.
Beyond their recorded work, Actress remain a vital part of Seattle’s independent arts community. As students and artists, they founded and continue to curate interdisciplinary live events such as Play Right! and Art in Color. These series unite local musicians, poets, comedians, dancers and drag performers, while Art in Color specifically raises funds for youth aid programs and spotlights artists of colour. Their ethos of “by artists, for artists” is reflected in everything they do.
With “Chances” and the forthcoming Summer’s Daughter EP, Actress cement their place among a new generation of independent artists redefining modern rock through heart, authenticity and collective spirit.
