‘Alone With My Pillow’ is the brand new track by Swiss-Italian artist and producer, Kihmy, and was released just today. Having played piano since childhood and been heavily interested in a range of genres including electronic, house, techno, and eventually hip-hop, Kihmy definitely has a great knowledge of music. Combine this with her natural musical talent and impressive song-writing abilities, as well as her further influences from funk, soul, and RnB music, and you’ve got yourself a very interesting artist to listen to. That’s Kihmy.
This new track starts with some softly played piano, taking your imagination to a dark and empty room with a few candles dotted around. After about 17 seconds, her smooth, deep-ocean vocals enter, with some more piano played in a livelier, twinkly way, as well as some haunting string sounds. She starts off by singing lyrics of confusion and overthinking, setting the scene of uncertainty before the pre-chorus line ‘I wonder when we’ll meet again’ shortly followed by ‘this is so strange’. The mood is ominous, that’s for sure.
The pre-chorus also represents the first time we hear a percussive beat, which starts somewhat slowly, building even more anticipation and suitably matching the lyrics. Then when the chorus drops, a few more percussive sound effects join, expanding the beat and increasing the tempo of the song. The lyrics of the chorus also show a step up from the verses’; the latter portray her confusion and vulnerability, whilst the lyrics of the chorus show that she’s built up the courage to ask her love interest why they aren’t being straight forward and honest with her. She’s laying her emotions on the table with her deep and unique voice, creating her signature melancholic atmosphere.
This song is fascinating in that there’s not too much going on, but the sound of Kihmy’s voice over the few musical elements that we hear really gives the song some depth and substance. That’s when you know you’re dealing with a proper talented singer.
Kihmy never misses. Each release is as intensely brilliant as the last, and they all offer something slightly different and new. You can stream ‘Alone With My Pillow’ on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/album/47RvVkcoy7nw6CYTzVK6Ti?si=e_k_zrNGRPGNTk7ZMdA_4g
