Now on his fourth release, British-Vietnamese songwriter Hongza has been turning heads in the London scene since mid-2020. Known for his warm, 2000s inspired indie-pop, Hongza has had support media outlets like Clout, Charlie Ashcroft at Amazing Radio, and BBC Introducing.
His latest release ‘Accolades’ channels the frustrations of social media and Gen Z’s dependence on likes, comments and follows. This sentiment is reflected in the instrumental too: the chorus is on the angstier side compared to Hongza’s other releases. “I hate myself and I blame my friends” is the recurring line, one that social media users today can undoubtedly relate to.
The video for ‘Accolades’ is an impressive DIY number, filmed entirely on an iPhone in Hongza’s bedroom. It’s the perfect fit for a track based on the feelings of isolation that come with extensive social media use.
Despite the lack of live music in the past year, Hongza has been able to make a name for himself. With his refreshing, now full-band, sound, he’s sure to be snapped up for live shows as soon as they’re on the cards again. Keep an eye out.
