Holly Clausius’ new single ‘It Will Stay Right Here’ is a wonderful tribute to a damaged Toronto music scene (Premiere)

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has ravaged local music scenes across the world, and while things are slowly returning, there is still so much work that needs to be done. Canadian singer-songwriter Holly Clausius is an artist that was deeply affected by the loss of live performances, and her new single “It Will Stay Right Here” is a touching tribute to those moments lost. A love song to the open mic scene that started Clausius’ career, “It Will Stay Right Here” features 10 different performers that used to occupy stages with her across the city, pre-pandemic. From the warm tones of saxophone player Evan Pang to the group harmonies, shimmering guitars, and the carrying piano melody, the daring indie-folk ballad offers community both in its subject matter and the way the song was recorded.

There is undeniable grief for venues and opportunities lost in the pandemic but also a hopefulness, reminding us that the music and the stories that were shared will never die. From heartfelt verses like “Our friends lighting up the stage, that warm, fuzzy feeling, I want it, I need it”, Holly Clausius brilliantly portrays the aching desire for shared artistic spaces that so many had lost during the age of quarantine. Keep an eye out for this budding indie songwriter as she ramps up towards the release of her debut album “Rose Garden”!
