Hamburg’s alt-pop scene has a luminous new presence. counterglow, the collaborative project of indie artists Lauren Goodley and Jonas Grell, are thrilled to premiere their debut album, echoes of self, alongside news of their first headline show on December 18 in Hamburg, Germany.
Blending dream-pop, indie-soul, modern psychedelia, lush synth textures, and jazzy grooves, counterglow crafts a signature sound that feels like floating through a cosmic dreamscape. Soft, echoing vocals and shimmering synths guide listeners through a universe where emotion, imagination, and atmosphere intertwine—music that can evoke the feeling of running through a sunlit flower field one moment, then weightlessly drifting into orbit the next.
Interestingly, echoes of self was never meant to be an album. What began as carefree late-night experiments quickly took on a life of its own. The first track they wrote together, “soon,” made something clear: “We realized, oh wow, this is something special. We should make more.” Initially, the songs were slated to be released under Lauren’s name, with Jonas credited as producer. But as the project grew, it became undeniable—they weren’t just collaborating, they were a band. counterglow was born, representing a shared creative identity that felt authentic and true.
echoes of self captures the emotional roadmap of early adulthood—pressure, anxiety, overthinking, loneliness, love, surrender, and ultimately, coming home to yourself. Each track is a mirror to recurring inner dialogues, self-doubt, growth, and acceptance. “This album is about realizing you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be,” the duo explains.
The record spans ethereal dreamscapes, indie-soul warmth, psychedelic synth explorations, and atmospheric grooves inspired by the likes of Tame Impala, Beach House, SAULT, Blood Orange, Crumb, Cleo Sol, Raveena, and The Marías—yet the music remains uniquely counterglow, imbued with a magic entirely their own.
Track Highlights:
- “echoes” – A cinematic opener confronting your inner critic, reminding you that you are your own greatest obstacle.
- “soon” – A groovy anthem for those always sprinting toward the future instead of living in the present.
- “control” – A feel-good love groove about surrendering and letting life fall into place.
- “grow” – Raw and vulnerable, preserving the final vocal take from the original demo for an unpolished, beautifully human honesty.
- “dunno where it’s going” – A late-night soundtrack for overthinkers navigating the city after a party.
- “new car” – A cosmic road trip through sound, exploring self-discovery, connection, and acceptance.
To celebrate, counterglow will perform their first headline show on December 18 in Hamburg, joined by their full five-piece band. Their live performances are intimate, immersive journeys—like a gentle conversation in melody, where time slows and emotions bloom.
Looking ahead, the duo shared glimpses of their 2026 plans: a second project in the works, an ambitious concept album blending synth-pop and indie rock. Whether it emerges as a full album or two EPs, fans can expect a wealth of new music from counterglow next year.
