Winnie Ama unveils her debut pop album ‘DEKA’

Northern-Irish-Ghanaian pop artist Winnie Ama has just released her debut album ‘DEKA,’ a vibrant, genre-blending mixtape that fuses pop with disco, soul, and folk influences.

The title DEKA means “one” in Ewe, her mother’s native language from Ghana.

‘One’ symbolises unity and creativity in diversity and is also symbolic of her first complete body of work.

Written alongside an international team of producers — Simon Le Saint (Belgium), Yacine Alaoui (France/Morocco), Jonny Parry (Liverpool), Greg Hummell (London) and David Goode (London) this album showcases a truly global sound.

Lyrically, it explores the highs and lows of romance, the grounding power of old friendships, identity and belonging, love, betrayal, acceptance and forgiveness.

Winnie explains how the album is about “choosing light without pretending the rain didn’t happen. It’s about celebrating community and my Northern-Irish-Ghanaian identity and embracing romantic love, acknowledging complicated times.

Every track has a unique heartbeat, just like every era in life. It’s really a mixtape album.

The lyrics are about the journey I’ve been on and letting myself be loud about joy. DEKA is about life.

It’s about community, love, friendships, work and changing emotions that come with all of that, making life vibrant, dynamic and ever-changing.”
