The Weird Canadian: Songs about freedom for people who still care

The Weird Canadian just dropped a brand new album, This Is What Freedom Looks Like. It’s a 16-song record that speaks plainly and honestly about the world we’re living in. Opening with ‘Whispers of the Crown,’ the record kicks off with an upbeat feel that sets the mood for what’s to come.

The songs move through a lot of different sounds and feelings. One song ‘ABC Freedom (A Kid’s Song About Thinking for Yourself)’ is a lighthearted song made for kids, built around ukulele and female vocals. It’s simple, fun, and carries a message that feels just as important for adults. ‘LOOKS DON’T RUN A COUNTRY’ on the other hand, brings a more groove-driven approach with touches of soul and R&B.

The album ends with ‘NOTHING GROWS FROM TAKING,’ a soulful pop-rock song that feels tailor-made for the radio. It closes things out on a thoughtful, emotional note, sending listeners off with a reflective state of mind.

Behind the music is Cody Johnston, the artist known as The Weird Canadian. His songs come from his personal experience. He writes about identity, frustration, and standing your ground when the world feels upside down. Made out of frustration with how people seem to forget basic freedoms and repeat old mistakes, this album is for anyone who still feels things and refuses to fake it.

Listen to the new album This is What Freedom Looks Like, out now.
