Rising alternative Afro-pop artist TeaMarrr turns attraction into a thrilling game of instinct and self-awareness on her infectious new single “SHARK baiT.” Blending Afro-pop, Afrobeats, Amapiano, R&B and alternative pop influences, the track is a bold, genre-fluid anthem that explores the irresistible pull between temptation and intuition.
Packed with sun-soaked grooves, hypnotic rhythms and playful lyricism, “SHARK baiT” captures the excitement of flirtation while acknowledging the dangers that can lurk beneath the surface. “I’ve always been fascinated by contradictions and oxymorons, soft and dangerous, tiny giant, playful yet powerful,” says TeaMarrr. “‘SHARK baiT’ lives in that tension. It’s playful, seductive, self-aware, and deeply connected to the larger story I’m telling through this animal zoo universe and the project coming soon, ‘I’m a Zoo Keeper Now.’ It means I’m tiny but a giant in the sexiest way.”
The inspiration behind the song came from an intensely magnetic online connection that reignited a part of herself she thought had disappeared following a difficult period of healing after a 2023 overdose.
“The theme of this track is tugging at polar opposites,” TeaMarrr explains. “From a sweet, inviting siren to a daring, forbidden kind of attraction. It reminded me that healing isn’t always linear, and sometimes life surprises you in unexpected ways.”
That emotional duality shaped the recording process. Arriving in the studio with collaborators Emily, Tommy and Gustav, TeaMarrr described herself as feeling “sharky.” Tommy immediately began creating darker, suspenseful musical ideas inspired by the iconic shark motif, before Gustav balanced the production with lighter, beachy R&B textures that transformed the song into a vibrant clash of sweetness and danger.
“Once I landed on the ‘Nemo’ line during the freestyle,” she laughs, “the song practically wrote itself.”
The result is a track that effortlessly shifts between shimmering melodies, Afro-infused percussion, sultry R&B vocals and driving Amapiano rhythms. The production mirrors the emotional push and pull at the centre of the story, where vulnerability and confidence, innocence and instinct coexist.
