Norwich-based four-piece Takeda have unveiled ‘California’, the latest step towards their upcoming debut album In Venus’ Train, which is now just right around the corner.

‘California’ follows the Takeda signature sound, a captivating harnessing of delicate folk acoustic with a grungey wall of fuzz. The single finds its development in a more vivid and colourful approach to the songwriting, a streak of more hopeful sentiment above the melancholic undercurrents. With plenty of bite still featuring across the four minutes, there’s also a shimmering addition to the soundscape.

Josh Harrison, the lead vocalist, comments on the single: “California is about how it felt to leave the cult I spent my whole life in. Leaving behind my family, friends and job. It’s about setting your mind on doing the worst imaginable thing you could do to yourself on a hunch that it won’t be as bad as they say. It’s about wondering for so long about what it would feel like to do it, and then just finally doing it.”

Harrison is joined in the group by Charlie Wilson, David Woodgett, and, when playing live, Ollie Welch. Their sound is self-described as “the loudest acoustic guitar on Earth”, and it’s quite apt. However, the sound that’s captivating writers and gathering tour audiences is more poignant than the phrase gives them credit for. A very exciting band!
