Dublin’s Pastiche has returned with ‘Body Clock’, the Irish pop songstress delivering an anthemic experience alongside peer Celaviedmai. Teeing up the EP Femme Fatality, set for release next month, the new single hits some of the upcoming project’s themes of body image, sexuality, infertility, and self-worth. Nonetheless, the EP is set to be a provocative project of resilience, laced with star appeal.
‘Body Clock’ starts with distant, sweeping soundscapes, but a bass rises into a dark, intoxicating beat beneath Pastiche’s dark magic vocals. It has a sense of immediacy and impatience, as if the clock is ticking as you’re listening. All the while, amongst the chaos, Pastiche is centred and powerful.
The story the song speaks to is one that can only come from the woman herself, Pastich explains, “Pastiche, for me, is what I always wanted to be as a woman – strong, independent, confident, all the things that I wish I was but that I feel like I’m not.
Body Clock came out of a really raw place. I was diagnosed with endometriosis at 25 and froze my eggs, thinking I was doing really well, and then this year I found out I also have adenomyosis — basically, I was told I needed to have a baby soon or I risk it never happening for me. A few days later, I had to fly to London for a studio session. I was totally shattered, and it was the last place I wanted to be, but I couldn’t cancel it. I couldn’t hide my emotion, so I opened up to Liam (my producer) about how I was feeling. I told him it felt like I had this big clock on my forehead that everyone could see, just counting down. We came up with Body Clock and then the song was written in 1 day. It’s about the pressure, the fear, and the frustration of feeling like your body is on a timeline you didn’t choose.”
Securing endless appreciation from tastemakers across formats, Pastiche has become a phenomenon, breaking out into the charts and having the live presence to boot. As Femme Fatality promises ambition, alongside the tackling of difficult themes with grace, the year is set to end with a bang.
