‘Old Machine’ sees Year of the Dog conjure up a lively ska melody and empowering vocals

Year of the Dog release ‘Old Machine,’ the first single from their upcoming debut album ‘Break Loose.’

‘Old Machine’ sees the Cardiff band conjure up a lively ska melody and empowering vocals.

Written after someone close to the band attempted suicide, the focus of the track is about staying present and choosing the fight.

It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s about pushing through, keeping your head above water, and focusing on what’s important.

And when you feel like you’ve run out of fight, firing up the old machine and roaring on.

Formed at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 2018 (the last Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac calendar), the band first came to wider attention after being selected as the Swing Band for Netflix’s Sex Education.

The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth – hometown to members Felix, Luke and Olly.

Rockfield is music industry legend: the birthplace of Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), Wonderwall (Oasis) and Yellow (Coldplay).

Produced by Rob Cass (Eric Clapton, Brian May, Jack Bruce), the album carries the warmth and soul of those classic recordings.

Old Machine captures that spirit with raw energy and emotional honesty – an undeniably timeless sound.
