Nath Tavares has unveiled a witty shot at the hustle culture environment on her new single ‘OBDN’t Overachiever’. The pop release sees the artist perform emphatically over a punchy hip-hop-influenced beat with an equally punchy attitude.
Pulling apart ideas of overachievement and constant pressure to perform, Nath lashes out at the ultimate pointlessness of doing as you’re told and centring your self-worth around an unrewarding career. Its mix of tongue-in-cheek humour and unfiltered honesty is a breath of fresh air, and the catchy delivery makes it all the more charming.
Nath dives in: “I have always been one to follow rules, doing exactly as I was told and rarely questioning authority. I idealised work, consistently put all my energy into being the best team member until I burned out, and naively believed managers and colleagues had generally altruistic intentions. However, as I grew older, I realised this was not the case, and questioned my people-pleasing tendencies and the purpose of my hard work – especially since I wasn’t reaping the rewards.
OBDN’t Overachiever explores these themes in an upbeat and humorous way, poking fun at myself and the messed-up working society we live in. I wrote this song one afternoon while playing with my brand new Arturia Minilab, and made a silly video to go along with it. It was a fun experiment for sure!”
Having lived across Brazil, Mexico, China, the United States, France and Portugal, Nath brings an international knowledge to songwriting, across his discography blending Latin, urban and pop influences. Returning to music with focus after a career in digital innovation and AI, she’s defiant towards the system and theatrical with it.
