Mouth Water captures a first encounter on ‘JJ (Give and Take)’

With “JJ (Give and Take)”, Mouth Water shares one of his most intimate releases to date. The new instrumental track is written for his daughter, who was born just months before work began on his new album, and reflects the fragile moment of meeting someone for the very first time, before familiarity and roles take shape.

JJ is the song I wrote for my daughter. It’s about me and her meeting and not knowing each other yet,” says Mouth Water, the project of Italian producer and multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Fancelli. That sense of openness runs through the entire piece, which unfolds gently and without urgency.

Almost entirely instrumental, the track stands apart within the album. Synthesizers are largely absent, with only subtle vocoder vocals drifting through the arrangement. Instead, the focus is on mood and space, allowing the music to feel grounded and unguarded. It is a quiet, reflective composition, and one that Fancelli considers his favorite on the record.

Known for blending modern electronic production with vintage influences, Mouth Water often moves between house music and nostalgic electro pop. Here, he strips things back, recalling the restrained intimacy of earlier instrumental work while offering a deeply personal statement.

“JJ (Give and Take)” follows the 2024 single “Blackout” and provides a softer glimpse into Mouth Water’s newest album, out now. Unhurried and sincere, the track captures a fleeting moment of connection, where everything is still undefined and full of possibility.
