Lara’s ‘Drifting’ is dream pop at its most contemplative

Melbourne pop artist Lara has returned with her new single ‘Drifting’, following the success of her debut album ‘Bored Games’ in 2019. The electro-pop track sees Lara move towards a more spacey, bordering psychedelic production style which fits perfectly with her soft yet powerful vocals. This shift towards a more electronic sound is a sign of things to come and perfectly encapsulates her ability to shift through influences from Nelly Furtado to James Blake.

The polished production is a key component of ‘Drifting’ and Lara’s sound in general. This clean style allows for her smooth vocal performance to become encapsulated within the production, which is an essential part of dream pop, creating a wall of sound which completely engrosses you. Lara’s stunning delivery completes this sonic vision perfectly.

Her lyrics are a relatable, but insightful journey through a transitional period that everyone goes through while still being a deeply personal experience. Her bravely personal lyrics detail this perfectly strange period that we all go through as we attempt to figure out what we want from our lives. ‘Drifting’ is a very suitable song for 2021 and Lara’s best work to date. As she begins to build momentum she will definitely be one to watch for the year as she develops her own sonic landscape.
