KWONIX, the collaborative project between LA producer Kwo and vocalist Unïx, are following up on a vivid debut with their heavenly new single ‘Sweet Karma’. ‘Full Speed’ was an introduction filled with tight, complex grooves and upward drive, and the new track continues to carve this neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop crossroads.
Shimmering with a touch of gospel, the centre of success for this track is magical vocal harmony stacks, delivered with a natural feel. Beneath that, the production is fantastic, brimming with warming keys, expressive guitars, and sleek rhythms. It’s got an edge of funk, subtly drawing you in to a head bob and foot tap. A blast from the past with the technical finesse and clean sonic atmosphere of the modern era, the comparisons to Silk Sonic or D’Angelo are stark.
Kwo shares, “’sweet karma.’ was the first full record Unix and I finished together a few years ago. When they sent me the vocals back the first time, I was absolutely floored. This was the point at which I knew we needed to keep working on music together.”
Unïx adds, “When KWO initially sent over the track to sweet karma, I remember it being completely different from the other stuff he had been sending over. It started with that crazy drum track that made me move in my seat as soon as I pressed play. I didn’t know what the hell to do with that, but I definitely wanted to do something funky because that’s what the guitar told me to do.
The story of KWONIX begins in 2023, with a virtual meeting that, as the pair allude to, quickly formed into an exciting new music venture and an infectious chemistry. These first few singles have channelled a timeless soul sensibility while keeping one foot firmly in the present, and long may that seductive sound continue.
