Jack Simpson tells a story with ‘Crucifix of San Damiano’

Yorkshire songwriter Jack Simpson has highlighted his songwriting ability with the single ‘Crucifix of San Damiano’, a standout from his EP, Jack Simpson is looking up at the Trees.

With his folk-rock craftsmanship at its best, laced within it his flair for the eccentric, the warmth of ‘Crucifix of San Damiano’ is laced with faith and reflection. Centred around a grooving bass and softly strummed acoustic guitar, Jack Simpson tells us his tale. As we stroll through the music, we are introduced to a graceful second voice, mounting into a choir, then a sliding electric guitar soaring notes above the main melodies. It’s got a raw, classic rock feel and an easy-going nature, the descriptive narrative putting a real picture in the mind of the listener.

On the broader EP, Jack adds, “This is a step up for me as the recording has improved immensely. Session musicians helped, but the strong songwriting is the key. As usual, a diverse range of subjects from babies to St Francis are covered with charm and humour.”

Reclusive, never giving a live performance, Jack’s sporadic releases can be mapped over multiple decades, making him one of Yorkshire’s best-kept musical secrets. He never shies away from an inspiration, so his songs themes feel varied and amiable.
