Hash Cabbage is making noise again in 2026 with their newest song, ‘The Bard on Basin Street.’
It delivers a smooth, laid-back vibe with a vintage 70s feel. The song features musical elements of their hometown region with a piano that adds a touch of class and gives the song a subtle jazz feel. That feel is easy-going, but the story underneath speaks of a darker side of their origin city of New Orleans.
The track focuses less on the stereotypical Mardi Gras party scene and more on the city’s grit and mystery. It follows a wandering street musician trying to find his way back home, both physically and emotionally. That struggle is detailed plainly in the lyrics “tries to find his way back home to play” and “you can see the tears in his eyes.”
The character isn’t based on just one person. Instead, it’s inspired by the mix of street performers and drifters you’d find around the French Quarter, people living day to day, playing music for tips, artists trying to chase their dream and find meaning along the way.
“I wanted to write a song reflective of a time and space about my hometown, New Orleans, LA. That’s what it’s trying to evoke but in a much darker sense of what you typically think from the conventional tourism angle.”
Hash Cabbage’s sound continues to be tastefully hard to pin down, blending rock, Americana, funk, and psychedelic influences into a sound all their own. ‘The Bard on Basin Street’ is a taste of what’s to come on their 2026 album Argan, showcasing their ability to tell authentic, human stories while keeping things musically loose and inviting.
