Hailing from County Dublin and now based in Greystones, Garrett Anthony Rice is back with “Purple Man (For Jimi)”, and honestly, it’s a track that grabs you from the first riff. Part of his upcoming double album EQUINOX, it’s clear Rice is really hitting his stride as a songwriter.
The song spins around this hypnotic, overdriven guitar riff, while his vocals cut through with a calm but sharp edge. It’s got this perfect balance, gritty enough to feel alive, but measured enough to show he knows exactly what he’s doing. There’s a hint of late-90s alt-rock in there, but it never feels like he’s trying to copy anyone. This is very much Garrett’s own sound.
And yes, the title nods to Jimi Hendrix, but don’t expect a cover or imitation. Rice isn’t leaning on the legend for flash, he’s channeling that spirit into something loose, groovy, and undeniably his own. You can feel the care in the groove, but it still moves with a natural momentum that keeps it infectious.
It’s confident, it’s grounded, and honestly, it just makes you want to press play again.
