South African alt-rock provocateurs Lunar & The Deception have landed with a debut that refuses to sit still. The Somnambulist, dropped March 6 via X-Ray Sound, is a sprawling, genre-defying trip through darkwave, dream pop, gothic, and neo-psychedelia, all stitched together by the fierce vision of frontwoman Britt Xyra Dusk. With co-production from Michael Rendall (The Orb, Peter Murphy, Killing Joke), the album feels both cinematic and razor-sharp, a record that makes you lean in while keeping you on the edge.
The lead single, ‘Ezeru Kazpam’, is a proper statement of intent. Opening with delicate piano notes and a haunting critique of a money-obsessed world, Britt’s vocals are equal parts mesmerising and menacing. Percussion and jagged guitar riffs swell into an almost apocalyptic shoegaze storm, before quietly retracting back to the ghostly piano motif, a perfect microcosm of the album’s restless energy.
Lunar & The Deception are no strangers to the spotlight: supporting Pussy Riot at Glastonbury, smashing London venues, and earning accolades from Metal Magazine, LOCK Magazine, and Powerplay (9/10). With a rhythm section informed by global travels, visuals inspired by tribal warriors and ancient mystics, and a sound that nods to everyone from Led Zeppelin to Evanescence, this is a debut that demands attention. The Somnambulist isn’t just an album, it’s a darkly enchanting journey you don’t want to wake up from.
