Another step closer to their third album, Hold For Room Tone, the Bonneville duo are back once again, bringing a brighter tone than their previous, grittier single, ‘In The Jungle’. This new, love-tinged warmth is entitled ‘Fools In The Game’.
They open with a sleek groove, decorated with glitzy e-piano. It settles into a slow jam vibe, with a conversation between instrumentation and vocal, with the topline some of the most impressive we’ve heard from Bonneville to date. With that said, the drums still feel punchy behind it, giving this easy movement to the whole package.
Hayashi explains, “It’s all about the game of love. We all play it. Sometimes you win, more often than not, you lose. You discard and draw again, but most of us never stop playing.”
“I had been listening to a lot of Thee Sacred Souls and wanted that feel,” McGee also shares. “It ended up landing outside of that, with a more straightforward bass groove and what feels to me like a late 1970s sound, similar to Andy Gibb’s ‘I Just Want to Be Your Everything.’”
Thee Sacred Souls is a fellow traveller in Bonneville’s world, reigniting the past for a new place in the present. Both channel some bold influences from classic soul into brand new ideas that feel alive, genuine and fresh, keeping the analogue sound in our ears. Wes McGee and Jeff Hayashi are bastions of respect for music legacy, but their retro sound still hits the same as anything climbing the charts today.
