London-based six-piece Birds Flying Backwards have released a new single, ‘If I Ever Needed Someone’, which provides listeners with the final preview of their upcoming debut album Lovebirds.
Pulling from their mix of alt-country, indie-folk and psych-rock, the track comes across the airwaves like a gentle breeze and a breath of fresh air. In five-and-a-half minutes, the band weaves elements of Americana into their style, with a lush, green soundscape containing a banjo and a harmonica alongside the guitars, piano, bass and drums.
That warming feel is super easy-going and well-paced. Above it, we get a beautifully harmonised duet which serves to deepen that natural centre. Perfectly suited to its ‘final teaser’ slot in the rollout, it becomes an invite for the full-length that you can’t turn down.
The band comments, “‘If I Ever Needed Someone’ is about finding yourself after heartbreak, and the resoluteness and self-assuredness that it takes to move on. Taking cues from Cut Worms, Daniel Romano and Wilco, it shifts the record from loss towards resolve – the moment when the dust finally settles.”
Formed by childhood friends and family around principal songwriter JR Sanders, Birds Flying Backwards have earned attention touring with The Hanging Stars and with their debut EP Surrender to The Void, both in 2024. Re-emerging in the summer on track towards the release of Lovebirds this year, there’s more music and more gigs to come from the sextet.
