An interview with MR.BLACK: New releases, Psytechno & Musical Influences

What would you say is the track that first influenced you to DJ/Produce when you were younger?

MR.BLACK: I come from the psytrance world, and that was the first thing that truly grabbed me and lit the fire in me. It was the music that made me understand the power of energy, groove, and the connection you can create between people through a set. It’s hard for me to choose just one track, because for me it was more of a whole era and a whole musical world, but psytrance was my first home, and everything started from there.

How has your sound evolved over time, and what do you think will next influence your music?

MR.BLACK: My sound today is psytechno, very clear and very direct. It’s a blend of my psytrance roots with my pull toward more techno-driven, modern, deeper, and more powerful worlds. I started from pure psytrance, but over time, I felt I didn’t want to stay inside the boundaries of one genre. I love taking the energy, hypnosis, and drive of psy and connecting it with power, sound design, and a more futuristic feeling. What will influence me next is mainly the desire to keep breaking boundaries. I’m always looking for the next point where the dance floor gets something familiar, but also something surprising.

Who is the artist occupying the most space in your playlists currently?

MR.BLACK: I listen to a lot of different things from different worlds, not just one artist. I’m drawn to artists who bring a strong identity and a real signature. I love music that has vision, not just trend. Right now, I’m very connected to artists and records that know how to take electronic music into a bigger, deeper, more immersive place, while still making it hit hard live.

What do you do to reset and avoid burnout?

MR.BLACK: For me, the most important thing is knowing when to stop for a moment and get back into perspective. My family keeps me grounded, and quiet time away from the studio is also very important for me. Sometimes, when I step away from music for a moment, I come back with more hunger, more clarity, and more inspiration. I also try to protect the real excitement in what I do, because the moment you start working only on autopilot, that’s where burnout begins.

Now let’s talk about your latest track with Gproject, ‘Free Your Mind’. Did you approach sound design or structure differently on this track than in your previous releases?

MR.BLACK: Yes, definitely. With “Free Your Mind,” it was very important for me to create a balance between immediate energy that works strongly on the dancefloor and something more precise and current at the same time. We wanted the track to feel big, sharp, and free, without losing our identity. In terms of both the sound design and the structure, there was very focused thinking around movement, tension, and release. Every element had to feel like it was pushing the listener forward. It comes from the psyworld, but it’s handled with a more modern, cleaner, and sharper approach.

What kind of experience do you want listeners to have when they hear “Free Your Mind” for the first time?

MR.BLACK: I want them to feel release. I want the title of the track to become a real feeling. For me, it should take you out of the noise of everyday life, free you from overthinking, and throw you fully into the moment. I want people to hear it and feel energy, freedom, movement, and total surrender to the music.

How has the crowd reaction been when you’ve played the track live?

MR.BLACK: The reaction has been very strong. It’s the kind of track you feel on the crowd very quickly, because it has very direct energy. At the right moment, it really takes over the dance floor. What interests me is not only whether people react, but how they react, and this track brings a real feeling of release. You can see it in people’s faces, in their movement, and in the atmosphere it creates.

How did the collaboration come about with Gproject?

MR.BLACK: G-Project are very good friends of mine, and that always makes the process more natural and more real. When there is a real personal connection, it becomes much easier to build a musical connection too. This collaboration came from chemistry, mutual respect, and a shared love for strong dance floor energy. We all come from this world, but each of us brings a different angle, and that’s exactly what made this connection interesting.

If listeners could take away one message from “Free Your Mind,” what would you want it to be?

MR.BLACK: The most important message is simply to let go, not to over calculate, and to allow yourself to feel. Music is a place of freedom, and the idea of “Free Your Mind” is to connect to that moment where you let go of everything and simply exist inside the energy.
