It’s hard to imagine that someone could explore concepts from medieval religion alongside ideas about evolution and the Big Bang theory in an indie rock song.
But that’s exactly what singer-songwriter Hilary Cousins does in his newest single ‘Fragments.’
Known for exploring weighty and provocative topics in his music, ‘Fragments’ weaves together themes about religion and science, the individual and the collective and questions of identity in a mesmerizing sonic landscape, complete with driving rhythms, infectious melodies and a rousing chorus.
The song was inspired by Cousins’ exposure to the writings of medieval mystics and their expectations for what would happen at the end of time.
Simultaneously he was exploring the Mojave desert landscape; observing the effects of time on geology and nature, exposing the fragments of earth’s long history (dry lake beds that were once oceans, sun baked mounds that were once snow-capped massifs).
The lyrics are a meditation on the contrast of these different understandings of the world around us.
The track was written, composed and produced by Cousins.
