California based alt-rock duo King of Cups are back with “Keeper of the Flame,” their brand new single from their upcoming Elemental album and one of their most personal to date.
From the first seconds of the track, it hits hard. On this cut, the heavy guitar riffs and driving rhythm section coupled with vocal delivery that is both raw and emotive grab you from the outset. And then the chorus hits – powerful, purposeful, and epic! A kind of moment that transforms you, one that clings to both sides of hearing it. Their sound is comparable to the likes of Hawthorne Heights, especially in the emotional urgency, guitar riffs, and delivery but adorned with a more combined Anberlin / Pine Creek Academy. King of Cups, however, fully embraces that intensity and emotional gravity.
“Keeper of the Flame” embodies the element spirit, following in the vein of Elemental. It also comes from a place — literally. The lyrics come from a hard experience that lead vocalist Shaun experienced, a heightened sense of vulnerability and spiritual experience paired with an extreme change in perspective. Also, if you are the type of person who is used to helping others, being the one who needs support makes all the difference. From his own personal experiences that he faces in everyday life of always helping others, he is able to convey all of the feelings and emotions in this single. His personal experience made him lower his defenses and stare down in the mirror and look inward — and that vulnerability is what gives the song its power.
There is also a philosophical layer, influenced by Manly P. Hall and his vision of “metaphysical medicine.” Hall believed that both our body and emotions suffer from being out of sync with something fundamental. You can hear that idea woven through the song, it’s not only about enduring something difficult; it’s also about what you derive from it and how you evolve.
“Keeper of the Flame” at its simplest, is empathy. It has to do with people, showing up for them and then knowing that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is just show yourself when others fail being there for you.
This shatters the sixth single from Elemental and speaks fully to where King of Cups are headed not necessarily heavier, but more honest, more vulnerable, and tighter than ever. Click Here to “Keeper of the Flame” now!
