Album Review: Miss J – ROCKHOUSE

With ROCKHOUSE, Miss J doesn’t simply blend genres. She engineers an entirely new ecosystem where classic rock swagger, house-driven pulse, and bold pop theatrics coexist in explosive harmony. The project stands as the culmination of Jacqueline Real’s multi-faceted artistic journey: theatre kid, behind-the-scenes creative, spoken word poet, festival lover, and now a fiercely individual recording artist carving her own lane with total intention.

From the first moments, ROCKHOUSE radiates the energy of someone who grew up studying stages, not just music. You can hear the New York grit, the discipline of performance, and the adrenaline of live shows pulsing beneath every track. Miss J pulls from classic rock with reverence. Echoes of Zeppelin, Cream, and The Doors flicker in the electric guitar lines and the unapologetic attitude of her vocals. She pairs that nostalgia with the hypnotic cadence of house, EDM, and festival culture. The collision doesn’t feel forced. It feels inevitable.

The album’s cornerstone lies in its ability to honor two worlds that rarely meet. One moment you’re headbanging to distorted riffs; the next, you’re swept into a drop that hits with the abandon of a 2 AM festival moment. It is both retro and future-facing. An album built for the vinyl crate and the dance tent.

Her newest single “22424” anchors the emotional heart of the record. It is a song shaped by heartbreak and disillusionment, but instead of wallowing, Miss J transforms the pain into liberation. The track is a turning point. A reminder that healing often begins when the noise quiets and the self becomes louder than the heartbreak. As her songwriting continues to gain national attention, highlighted by her recent Josie Awards nomination, “22424” feels like the moment she steps confidently into her identity as a writer with something real to say.

Throughout ROCKHOUSE, Miss J fearlessly challenges the notion that genres must exist in silos. Her sonic philosophy, “Why keep genres in their own lanes when they hit harder together?” is more than a tagline. It is the backbone of the entire album. By releasing the project independently under her own imprint, Electric Legacy Music, and partnering with Sony Orchard for distribution, she also makes a bold statement about artistic ownership and vision.

The Miss J Experience, her live show, pushes this mission even further. Much like the album, it is built for all ages, all backgrounds, and anyone who still believes music should make you feel something. Preferably in the chest, and preferably at full volume.

The album’s world expands with her backstory. Influenced by everything from the rock her father blasted through a boombox, to the reggae-rock textures introduced by her sister, to her own love of disco, Michael Jackson, and Aaliyah, Miss J carries decades of musical DNA into her work. Her past as a spoken word poet and her experiences with mental health and imposter syndrome add a layer of emotional authenticity that grounds even the most energetic tracks.

ROCKHOUSE succeeds because it isn’t trying to follow trends. It is creating a space where Miss J can finally sound like herself. It is spirited, unruly, theatrical, and deeply human. For listeners, it offers an immersive, high-energy ride. For Miss J, it feels like the start of a legacy she is building on her own terms.

ROCKHOUSE is not just an album. It is an invitation. And Miss J makes it impossible not to accept.
