Track of the day: The xx – ‘On Hold’

Today marks the release of The xx’s new 7″ single ‘On Hold’ – the first song from the Mercury Prize-winning band’s 3rd studio album ‘I See You’ set for release January 13th 2017 via Young Turks.

‘On Hold’ yields the familiar dreamy xx sound with percussive electronic elements bridging the gap between Jamie xx’s solo work and the 3 piece band. The chorus hosts a choppy pitched down vocal snippet of a Hall & Oates’ ‘I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)’ over a footwork style analog beat. The comeback track includes the bands trademark whining guitars and pads with Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Simm conversing about their naivety of love and how their emotions have matured.

After three years without any new music from The xx, ‘On Hold’ is a reassuring and heart-warming return for fans that gives everyone a good reason to get excited for the January album.
