Boston-based vocalist and songwriter Penni Layne brings jazz, soul and R&B together on everyday i fall in love, an album that balances classic influences with original songwriting and an intimate, contemporary sensibility. Recorded at New York’s Sear Sound and co-produced with longtime collaborator and husband Larry Jackson, the project centres on live performance, allowing the chemistry between its musicians to shape the record’s sound.
Joined by pianist Michael Kanan, upright bassist Neal Miner and guitarist Greg Ruggiero, Layne favours organic arrangements over elaborate production. Recorded together in the studio, the ensemble creates a natural sense of interplay that places vocal phrasing, instrumental detail and musical communication at the forefront. Layne’s delivery moves between jazz sophistication and the expressive warmth of soul and R&B, giving the material a consistent identity across styles.
Four original compositions, everyday i fall in love, fallin’ in love, this time and on top of the world, sit alongside reimagined jazz standards, extending the album’s traditional foundations through personal songwriting. Jackson’s vocal contribution to on top of the world adds another dimension to the project, reflecting the creative partnership at its centre. Across the collection, themes of romance, vulnerability and enduring connection provide a clear lyrical thread without restricting the music to nostalgia.
Rather than attempting to recreate a bygone jazz sound, everyday i fall in love draws on the genre’s enduring strengths: expressive vocals, responsive musicianship and arrangements that leave room for spontaneity. The result is a polished yet unforced release that highlights Layne’s versatility as a vocalist and songwriter, while establishing a cohesive musical space for her original material alongside the standards that inform it.
