Frankfurt based songwriter Berthold Kusserow reflects on the emotional aftermath of the COVID pandemic with his latest single, “Feel the Rain.” Blending the warmth of classic soft rock with jazz influenced instrumentation, the song explores grief, isolation and the possibility of healing after a period that changed millions of lives.
Released through MusicHub and featuring Alex Brossmann and Robert “Hubi” Hofmenn, “Feel the Rain” was inspired by the distress and uncertainty experienced during lockdown. For Kusserow, the pandemic exposed the fragility of everyday life, bringing feelings of fear, frustration and helplessness into homes across the world.
The song is dedicated to those who lost their lives, the families and friends left grieving, and the people who experienced prolonged isolation during the crisis. It also acknowledges the healthcare professionals whose compassion and dedication helped others through an exceptionally difficult period.
At the centre of the track is a simple image: rain washing away pain. Kusserow uses it as a metaphor for emotional release and the slow process of recovering from experiences that cannot easily be forgotten.
While the lyrics confront difficult subjects, the music offers a contrasting sense of warmth and optimism. Built around a steady 90 BPM rhythm, the arrangement combines melodic soft rock with touches of jazz, allowing its uplifting choruses to emerge from the song’s more reflective passages.
Rather than attempting to offer easy answers, “Feel the Rain” recognises that people experienced the pandemic in very different ways. For some, it meant the loss of loved ones. For others, it brought loneliness, disrupted childhoods, damaged relationships or feelings of guilt and regret that have continued long after restrictions ended.
Kusserow hopes the song can provide a moment of connection for those still carrying those experiences.
“Music can be a healer. I hope that this song will help just a little bit to heal wounds that still hurt and to make whole what was broken,” says Kusserow.
That belief in music’s ability to connect people is central to his songwriting. Although “Feel the Rain” looks back at a specific period in recent history, its message extends to the more universal experience of finding a way forward after loss.
The track also reflects Kusserow’s longstanding affection for the melodic songwriting and rich harmonies of 1970s and 1980s soft rock. His music draws on those influences while exploring the ordinary experiences, unexpected challenges and emotional contradictions that shape people’s lives.
Originally a member of the German soft rock band Construction in the late 1970s, Kusserow later stepped away from music to build a career in another industry. After many years, songwriting gradually returned to the centre of his life.
More recently, he has been involved with Sound Wizzards and has developed his work through collaborations with musicians and producers across Europe. His songs have received international playlist placements and radio support, while his recent writing has focused on refining a sound that combines classic rock influences with contemporary production.
With “Feel the Rain,” Kusserow brings that musical background to a subject that remains deeply personal for many listeners.
The song does not suggest that time alone can erase grief or undo the consequences of the pandemic. Instead, it offers the possibility that people can begin to heal through compassion, remembrance and a willingness to reconnect.
For Kusserow, the rain represents that hope: a chance to acknowledge what has happened without allowing the pain of the past to define everything that comes next.
“Feel the Rain” is available now through MusicHub.
