Oakland, California power pop outfit The Goods return July 22 with “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the first single from their upcoming LP Goodbye Summertime, due September 16 on Dandy Boy Records. Less than a year after releasing their debut full-length Don’t Spoil the Fun, songwriter Rob Good pushes the project into new territory, folding Beatles-esque psychedelia, jangling folk rock, sunny indie pop, and the melodic punch of classic power pop into something far bigger than what came before. For fans of The Lemon Twigs, Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Young Guv, and The Apples In Stereo, “Summer’s Almost Gone” is the first glimpse of an album written during a period of dramatic personal change and creative obsession.
Built around ringing guitars, soaring vocal harmonies, and the crack of a snare that pushes the song forward, “Summer’s Almost Gone” captures the feeling of watching time slip by faster than you’d like. The song arrives with a simple but urgent message. “Now is all we have,” says Good. “The present is slipping away, the future isn’t guaranteed, so what are we waiting for?” It’s a sentiment that feels especially at home in the Bay Area, where entire neighborhoods seem to change overnight, beloved venues disappear, and another summer can vanish somewhere between a late-night drive across the Bay Bridge and the last BART ride home.
For longtime followers of The Goods, the new material feels like a natural progression rather than a sharp left turn. The hooks are still there. So are the harmonies and jangling guitars that have defined the project from the beginning. What’s changed is the scope. Working from his Oakland studio, Good handled the bulk of the performances himself while bringing in key contributions from longtime collaborators Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen, and Ian McBrayer. The songs stretch further, the arrangements take more chances, and the sound reaches well beyond the power pop framework of earlier releases. It’s the work of a songwriter expanding his palette without losing sight of melody, heart, or the thrill of a perfectly placed hook.
Good has spent years as a fixture of the Oakland underground through his work with Ryli, Joel Cusumano, Yea-Ming and The Rumours, and Cocktails, while quietly building a reputation as one of the area’s sharpest songwriters. With The Goods, he’s carved out a space that feels equally informed by decades of guitar pop history and the communities that shaped him. There are echoes of British Invasion melody, the Bay Area’s current indie pop resurgence, and long afternoons spent digging through record bins, but the songs never feel trapped in nostalgia. They’re rooted in the present, even when looking to the past. While “Summer’s Almost Gone” stands on its own as a hook-filled summer anthem, it also hints at the wider scope of Goodbye Summertime. Produced by Good in his Oakland studio and mixed and mastered by Bart Thurber, the album expands The Goods’ sound well beyond the jangling power pop of earlier releases, bringing psychedelia, folk rock, sunshine pop, and ambitious studio experimentation into the mix. The result feels less like a calculated reinvention and more like a record collector finally giving himself permission to pull every favorite LP off the shelf at once.
