Tim Burden, after ten years as part of the fabric of Bristol’s music scene, has arrived with a debut single under a fresh moniker, Late Stay Ultra Girls. The track, ‘Like Washing Sieves’, introduces a sound at the crossroads of art-rock, synth-noir, post-rock and a lovingly off-kilter nature.
Bright, whimsical, plucky keys arrive immediately over a playful rhythm section. Into the verse, an atmospheric, uneasy backdrop accompanies a raw vocal performance. Bouncing between these tense moments and a more mischievous style, it results in a theatrical, charming first view. The track was recorded with producer Stew Jackson.
In Burden’s words, “I wrote the music to the chorus of Sieves when I was 15 years old on an out of tune piano that a family friend stole from Portishead Nautical School (now defunct) and delivered unannounced to my bemused parents. 15 years later I wrote the line ‘like a homeless hermit crab in a soup can bedding down, it seems you’ve got a rotten case of falling in love’. 6 months later I finished writing the song, 2 years later I recorded it and now here we are.”
This charismatic, lightly chaotic flair is set to return across a forthcoming series of singles from the new project this year, so keep an eye on this unique newcomer.
