Zurich’s MATONDO has unveiled the thumping electro-pop of ‘DOPAMINE’, a sleek but punchy new single. It’s the first tease offered for her forthcoming EP.
An alternative, almost hyperactive atmosphere of heavy production features colossal kick drums, rattly hi-hats and processed vocals. A confident and assertive delivery performs lyrics themed around the addictive draw of infinitely scrolling. With that in mind, the production’s vast, fuzzy synths create a sense of overwhelm, and the tight electronics carrying a glitchy feel are all the more intentional. Stimulating and all-consuming, the sonics directly reflect the content they portray.
In MATONDO’s words, “Staying focused on the things that matter in today’s world seems to be getting harder and harder. ‘DOPAMINE’ is about the feeling of the dopamine rush triggered by reels and delves into the depths and turmoil of social media.”
Since her debut, the vocalist, producer and songwriter has sought to blur genre boundaries, moving freely between the tendencies R&B, indie, electronic pop and beyond, drawing from classical training, jazz improvisation and a clear instinct for experimentation.
As an introduction, and with the EP in the pipeline, ‘DOPAMINE’ certainly offers something to get excited about, as MATONDO creates a unique sound with relatability at its core.
