There’s a version of Oriana Gidi’s career that reads like an industry CV: co-scoring an HBO documentary with Leo Heiblum, Netflix placements, sharing a stage with Patti Smith in Paris. “Frozen Spiderwebs” is not that version.
The Mexico City composer’s new single is loose, playful and a little strange, built around what she describes as “a fun, whimsical story about spiders and trees.” Joe Dart of Vulfpeck anchors it on bass, while stone marimba, congas, sampled flute and layers of synth and vocal build something that feels more like a daydream than a portfolio move. It is the sound of someone with serious credits choosing joy over credentials.
That’s not a small thing. A lot of artists with Gidi’s breadth of experience default to the work that signals their range. The fact that she’s opening this new chapter with something so genuinely carefree says something about where her head is at right now, and it makes you curious about what comes next.
“Frozen Spiderwebs” is out now.
