Disaster Fantasy’s dystopian synth-pop ‘The Hourglass’

Distaster Fantasy have released a hypnotic and dark new synth-pop release in the form of the single ‘The Hourglass’, which will also mark the title track of their forthcoming EP. A nocturnal brood from start to finish with a steady pulse softly expanding into an impressive, shadowy atmosphere.

The vocals are hauntingly beautiful, otherworldly and commanding, layered with harmonies and percussive vocals. A heavy kick drum plays with the unstoppable bass, other synths swirling and oscillating around the mix. A detailed dystopia emerges from the flickering fluorescence across a kaleidoscopic four-minute runtime.

On the single and upcoming EP, vocalist Ryann explains, “This will be the most conceptually-driven thing we’ve released. ‘The Hourglass’ is a whole world. The stories in the songs are told from the perspective of characters who have some connection to a fictional bar in Los Angeles called The Hourglass. We’re huge Lynch fans, and The Hourglass could easily be compared to One Eyed Jack’s from Twin Peaks or Silencio from Mulholland Drive- bad things happen there; it’s mysterious and crooked, and there’s maybe even some esoteric, metaphysical force under the surface…”

The duo is comprised of Ryann Donnelly and multi-instrumentalist Byron Kalet, one based on Lopez Island and the other in Brighton. Influenced by the likes of Kraftwerk, OMD, Robyn and LCD Soundsystem, the pair have built a sound of disco, alternative-pop and experimental flair. They’ve received lots of support from the music press and are looking for the upcoming project to continue that praise.
