Following a premiere on Radio 1, the Nottingham-born and now London-based artist GoodThing has shared his fresh new track ‘I Like The Way I Feel’. Loose-limbed confidence with a danceable neo-soul package, it’s warm, hazy and an antidote to the February weather. Elastic and inventive, it’s got a sleek feel-good mentality and an addictive charm
Chopped guitar loops and field recordings are introduced with reverberating claps. A thick bass tone is next in the mix, before a wave of instrumentation in a percussive shuffle, subtly soaring disco strings and vocalisations. The main vocal is half-spoken and drifting, playful, assured and part of the band rather than leading it; it adds another layer of enticement.
The artist explains, “I like the way I feel” sample that opens the track, this single is a celebration of feeling good, moving on pure intuition against the odds, and the power of self belief. With shades of disco groove, electronic, and golden era hip hop sampling it’s a homage to trusting your gut and following whatever makes you feel good. Recorded in a day with Callum McGuinness at Moss Studios, lyrically the song explores the tension and irony between dreaming big and the ways we can unknowingly hold ourselves back from getting there. “You know I would if I could but I struggle to change…”
Describing his sound as “Tarantino Disco”, GoodThing starts with an aesthetic and lets the music emanate from there. This gives the music a curated feel and has led to local and national support. Releasing an EP late last year, he’s already embarking on a new era for the project.
