Jack Simpson has shed more light on his EP, Jack Simpson is looking up at the Trees, with a deeper insight into the single ‘Babies are Boring’. Leaning into his gift for playful storytelling and sharp humour with a warm musical touch, the track is bouncy and infectious.
Leading with guitars and a tight rhythm section groove. It’s eccentric in delivery and subject matter, but nonetheless is lifted by a classic rock sensibility in a sticky melody. Cheerful, funny, slightly odd and oddly touching, it’s self-aware, and that ‘not taking itself too seriously’ brings an added charm to the final product.
Jack dives into the themes, “I was keen to explore the feelings of the older child when their mother had had another baby,” he explains. “Feelings of alienation and bewilderment are explored. However, tongue in cheek, instead of going up Thunder Road, the subject goes round on their bike in their garden. They then have no one to talk to and so discuss the situation with pet hens. The tune is deliberately repetitious and catchy, and indeed, children appear to love it even though it has been written for adults.”
Sitting within six-track Jack Simpson is looking up at the Trees, the North Yorkshire songwriter’s collection is balanced between wit and reflection, guided by a nostalgic instinct. With sparse releases across the years and rarely appearing live, Jack Simpson lets the music do the talking.
