The new single from Dom Quincey, ‘Through The Door’, once again embraces the slow-burning of alt-pop in a confessional, grief-stricken and weighty poem. Following in the footsteps of ‘It’s Not The End…’, similar subject matter is reflected in a new environment, as Dom gently pulls at a deeply personal thread, unravelling his feelings of loss with the utmost honesty.
Sombre guitars and spacey synths are the vocals’ first foundations. Soft but cutting, as its emotions rise, as do swathes of delicate strings and reverberating, sparse drum rhythms. At the point where most pop tracks might draw the tenderness to a premature end, Dom reaches towards a higher climax, his reserved performance almost breaking out into something more furious, before drifting back down.
As Dom says, “When loss feels impossible to comprehend, it’s easier to live in fantasy than in the reality of their absence. ‘Through the Door’ was a really difficult song for me to write and record. It continues the story of loss which I started on my last single, “It’s Not the End…”, but from a more raw perspective. It’s about losing someone suddenly and being left with so much unfinished business. There’s a specific kind of yearning that comes from that. I wrote it from a place of bargaining where you’d do anything for them to just come back, even though you know they won’t.”
With almost baroque strings, 90s alternative textures and intimate, all-encompassing cinema at every turn, the new era shapes up to be worthy of praise for both subtlety and impact. Tastemakers take note, as increasingly Dom is recognised for his talents and taking them to new heights.
