Sofia Gobbi has spent the past year or so emerging as a bold alt-pop personality with a sharpened edge. With the release of her debut album, Bigger Man, she provides a cohesive statement of someone who knows she provides the whole package, knowing exactly what she wants and the creativity to get there.
Across ten tracks, Gobbi follows in the footsteps of her contemporaries in bringing a nostalgic, rock-tinged, biting atmosphere, but by no means lives within the shadow of bigger artists. The polish is without fault, while her songs are immediate, honest, relatable and fearless. At her most assertive, there’s an empowering, no permission needed attitude, at the raw and reserved, she shows she’s capable of a truly emotional core, messy and reflective.
The knack for turning her personal moments into shared experience is not something to be sniffed at, as her cutting observations on the changing dynamics of dating and relationships beg to be screamed along to. Sofia is witty, talented and infectious.
As she says, “Dating today is messy. Roles are shifting, expectations are blurring, and a lot of the time it feels like women are the ones carrying it all – making the first move, planning the dates, picking up the check, and holding the emotional weight. At one point, I thought: fine, I’ll be the bigger man.”
