MATTN & Highup bring fierce techno mayhem on ‘It Must Have Been Love’

MATTN and Highup take a bold turn with ‘It Must Have Been Love’, breathing new life into the 90s classic with a mix of raw and full-throttle energy.

The track opens with a haunting vocal line that draws on the heart of the original, before tearing into a fierce, techno-driven drop that blurs the line between nostalgia and modern dance intensity. When the vocal cuts through as the production pulls back — “But it’s over now…” — the tension hangs in the air just long enough to make the next hit land even harder. Balancing melody and mayhem, the duo weave between pulsing synths, rolling percussion, and sharp rhythmic turns, proving a perfect merger for both artists ferocious styles.

MATTN, one of the core names of Smash The House, has carved out her place as one of the most exciting names in electronic music, blending mainstage power with an instinct for melody, as a regular across major festivals from Tomorrowland to Creamfields. Australian bass producer Highup continues to defy expectations, here landing on the Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike-led imprint for his first link-up with MATTN. Leading on from collaborating with everyone from Snoop Dogg to Mariana Bo & DJ Soda, here he brings his Gold Coast sound to the fore as one to stand up and take note of.

Released on Smash The House this November, ‘It Must Have Been Love’ captures that rare balance of familiarity and surprise — a tribute to a classic that doesn’t just rework it, but reimagines it for today’s dance generation.
