Massachusetts-based collective Goodwin returns with “Friend”, a spellbinding new single that exists somewhere between sound and silence, music and meditation. Known for their ability to weave art rock, folk, and experimental textures into something wholly their own, Goodwin continues to expand their creative universe, this time by setting the timeless words of Rabindranath Tagore to music.
The track serves as the second glimpse into the group’s forthcoming album, an ambitious project that reimagines the works of historic poets through a modern musical lens. With “Friend”, the band captures the introspective spirit of Tagore’s verse and transforms it into an ethereal, slow-burning composition that shimmers with quiet intensity.
“Soothing yet steeped in mystery, ‘Friend’ unfolds like a whisper through the fog,” says frontman Michael E. Goodwin. “The choice of instruments reflects not only the mood and content of the poetry but also aims to describe the sonic landscape of the poet himself.”
Musically, “Friend” is built on restraint. The ensemble, Emily Campagna (vocals), Jason Fletcher (guitar), Yahuba Garcia (percussion), Michael E. Goodwin (vocals/guitar), Matt Lydon (drums), Anne Preis (violin), Celia Sieckert (cello), and Ethan Stewart (bass/keyboard)—creates a delicate interplay between strings, subtle percussion, and layered harmonies. Each note feels deliberate, each silence purposeful. The addition of Anthony Safferty on sitar lends the song a meditative pulse, grounding its dreamlike tone in an ancient, organic rhythm.
The result is something quietly revelatory: a song that blurs centuries, cultures, and genres, finding emotional truth in both the personal and the universal. Where Bon Iver’s introspection meets the rhythmic curiosity of Talking Heads and the melodic earnestness of R.E.M., Goodwin situates “Friend” in a space that feels timeless.
At its heart, the track explores the longing for connection, “We are all searching in the darkness for our friend,” Goodwin reflects. “Whether or not that search bears fruit is, in part, a product of the questions we are willing to ask.”
With “Friend”, Goodwin continues their evolution as one of the most thoughtful and boundary-pushing collectives in the contemporary indie landscape. The single is both a meditation and a conversation, a reminder that music like poetry exists to help us make sense of our search for meaning, and for each other.
