Jen Lush returns with poetic depth on double-single ‘Wolf & The Dog / Black Wing’

Adelaide’s own Jen Lush has re-emerged. The artist’s last release feels like only yesterday. Still, it’s been two years since Hum of the Mettle pitched Lush as a truly thoughtful and emotionally fearless songwriter, creating these masterful explorations of folk’s limits.

The striking new double-single ‘Wolf & The Dog / Black Wing’ continues the endeavour, weaving in art-pop and folk-rock amongst a soft, poetic tapestry. The undercurrent manifests in cinematic tension, as the pair contrasts a distinctly alternative stadium thriller with a dreamy, swirling, and graceful meditation. As the listener, you’re blessed with some of Jen’s most heartfelt, poignant songwriting to date.

Explaining each track, she begins, “Black Wing was born in solitude on a writing retreat, sparked by the loss of a Black Wing pencil and the discovery of a lone black cockatoo feather in an open field. A meditation on impermanence and letting go, it was written with an ordinary pencil, in a quietly extraordinary moment.”

On the other hand, “Between Wolf & Dog began as a haunting riff from guitarist Sam Cagney and grew into a full collaboration with my band, The Field. Inspired by Georgia Blain’s novel, it inhabits the dusky threshold where friend blurs with foe, and the known slips into uncertainty.”

It’s a gift to have Lush’s music back in our ears. Now, with a band to back her and a refined sound from performing across her home country, the already award-winning artist has her sights on higher ambitions.
